How Religion Works
It’s quite simple, people quote ancient texts like the Bible. When an inconsistency is found by a non-believer, theists make a new claim that is not falsifiable that resolves the inconsistency.
For example:
Non-Believer: Jesus said that you are either with him or you are against him. That’s a false dichotomy… Why would he make such a stupid statement?
Theist: Jesus is God, so whatever he says is true, even if it’s illogical.
Non-believer: OK, but you can’t prove or disprove that Jesus is God, or that whatever God says is true.
Non-Believer: God tells us we should kill our children if they dishonor us.
Believer: That’s not a commandment, it’s just a suggestion.
Non-Believer: Well, God even asked Moses to sacrifice Isaac. How does a benevolent God do something like that?
Believer: The Lord works in mysterious ways.
Non-Believer: That’s just a statement of fact that can’t be proven or disproven.
Believer: It’s in the Bible…
All the inconsistencies in the Bible can be justified away by making new claims that can’t be falsified. That’s why the Christianity of the 1500s, is so different from modern Christianity. We see inconsistencies and we use our innate moral compass to refine the way we live and behave. That’s why Christians don’t typically stone their children or their adulterous daughters; however, in order to preserve their religion, they must manufacture new claims – and the less falsifiable these claims are, the less they can be addressed from a logical point of view.
